November 13, 2014 | False Freedom

“For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.”

(2 Peter 2:18-19 NASB)

After I taught this piercing passage in 2 Peter 2, a friend reminded me of Goethe’s brilliant insight, drawn from Peter’s wisdom:

“None are more enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Genuine freedom is found in Christ alone. Thus, we:

  • Praise God for the gift of freedom through trust in Jesus.
  • Pray for those entrapped in false freedom, which is a trap.

Provide help to those escaping error.
